I bought my parents a Tablo Quad + 1TB HDD + Lifetime EPG Data for Christmas in 2019 and have used it a little and set it up. (For example I recorded every episode of The Twilight Zone over new years when they were being aired for 4 days straight and now I can watch them at my leisure with no commercials) I also like to record some of my favorite old shows, edit out the commercials and then watch them when I have time. I purely use this as a DVR and when I want to watch live TV I either use the HDHomeRun app ( on my FireStick or Roku) or the Android TV Live Channels app (on my Nvidia Shield). This has worked great for me for recording. I have had since late 2018 an HDHomeRun Quatro + Plex as my DVR. even without listing the DishTVPal, Windows Media Center, Sony DHG-HDD250 DVR's that I've owned over the last 15 years to record OTA TV. If you are the type of person that just wants to record the shows, watch them and then delete them, the Tablo is probably the better choice. If you are technically minded and don't mind maintaining your own server the HDHomeRun is much more flexible. TL DR Really with either device you can't go wrong. Here is some more detail I posted about my experience with both over at r/tablotv Both devices (HDHomeRun+Plex and Tablo) will do what you are asking. However, the HDHomeRun can be used with other services, I use it will Plex. The HDHomeRun is just a tuner and while they have an app, it isn't as full featured as the Tablo. ![]()
