I think a lot of deep thought and creative work went into this excellent game. For most of the game, though, you are playing in zoomed-out mode, paying attention to the ships, the sea, the sky, your chart and compass - and managing your assets judiciously. I like the fact that it can be a single-player game - so I could exit the game and carry on the next day from where I left it.Īs mentioned, the graphics are exceptionally fine (as long as you don't zoom in on the ships all the way, or count the Treasure Island characters, sailors etc. I was playing it for about 16 hours a day on some days, because I enjoyed it so much. Luckily, this was during the festive season, so I had a lot of free time. I was having so much fun sailing the open seas in my ships of choice, salvaging floating crates, rescuing survivors, dodging attackers, trading with smugglers and exploring coastlines, that I tended to ignore the regular assignments that pop up, each day. I like the sound track too, which for me, captures the spirit of the era perfectly.Īs soon as I started getting nto this game, I was hooked. Likewise, the cannon fire sounds very authentic and dramatic. The sea behaves like real sea, and is so realistic, including the wake that the ships create, you could easily be watching a movie. The amazing choice of ships and their sails are beautifully crafted, and they rock and roll on the waves and lean in the wind totally realistically. The graphics, for the most part, are superb. Just as in real life sailing, you have to keep abreast of wind direction, weather conditions, compass headings, sail control etc. I have also done some real life sailing and navigation, and really appreciate the authenticity of many aspects of the game. That may be partly because I've always been a fan of the 18th century days of sail.
